How do I get from Detroit to New York City going through Canada?

Everyone says this is faster than going through the U.S. the whole way. But the maps/driving directions websites (google, mapquest, yahoo) are giving me stupid routes. Does anyone know the quickest common knowledge route???|||Best way is to head towards Toronto, follow the 401 highway east, to Kingston, ON, Canada, then head south Gananoque over the border into New York, then drive south to New York city|||ambassador bridge to canada.... follow the signs toward nigara city... trust me i live in detroit|||Ride the north shore of Lake Erie and re-enter the US at Buffalo. Buy a map for godsakes.
